Carmel brings a high level of multi-disciplined expertise to the Prendos team of structural engineers, having first qualified as a civil engineer before studying structural engineering at Ireland’s prestigious Queens University.
Buildings have always held a fascination for Carmel. She has gained international experience in countries including Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Middle East and New Zealand, and is particularly adept at gaining an in-depth understanding of local design codes and building standards quickly. Having knowledge and experience of how other countries approach structural construction design and modification is certainly an advantage for her clients here in New Zealand.
Carmel has been involved in the design, technical delivery, client and council liaison, and project management of numerous projects including hospital and medical facilities, schools and childcare facilities, a concrete framed auditorium and steel framed exhibition spaces, numerous extensions/ alterations/ and structural assessments for residential properties, remedial work to existing wharf structures, detailed design for strengthening heritage structures, pedestrian footbridges, a multi-storey car park, new commercial buildings, and the relocation of existing steel and timber framed buildings. She has even worked on a palace! These projects have ranged in value up to AED 1 billion.
At Prendos, Carmel’s current focus is on new residential work and the repair and strengthening of existing buildings to ensure they conform to the updated Seismic Strengthening Regulations which into effect on 1 July 2017. She enjoys being a part of a team where each member brings a unique point of difference and expertise to the structural engineering practice.
